The tournament took place July 18-21 at the Bellevue Plantation Polo Club, a few kilometers from the nation’s capital, and was open to the public and all rugby enthusiasts.

Saint Lucia Carnival 2019, deemed a huge success by the government and most other commentators, has been criticized by the usual sectors. The last cited group described this year’s Parade of the Bands as indecent, over the top, a phenomenon of recent vintage. Some have claimed the demonstrated revelry is alien to the morals and values that once guided our carnival.

The constitutional challenge brought by attorney Martinus Francois over parliament’s failure to elect a deputy House speaker following the 2016 general elections this week took another step backward. The motion originally named attorney general Stephen Julien and Speaker Andy Daniel. On 13 February the AG’s counsel, Mr. Dexter Theodore, successfully applied for the removal of the AG as a party in the case, on the basis that under Section 36 of the Constitution it is parliament, not the government’s executive branch, that is obligated to elect a deputy Speaker.

In its 2016 Public Statement on St. Lucia IMPACS, the U.S. Embassy in Barbados, the Eastern Caribbean and the OECS, lauded the Government of Saint Lucia for “inviting CARICOM’s Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (IMPACS) to conduct an investigation into allegations that members of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force committed extra-judicial killings from 2010 to 2011”.
