Let me just say from the onset that it was unfortunate that the word “criminal” was used by a government senator to describe the actions of a few carnival enthusiasts. Their attempts at staging spontaneous activities on what would have been carnival Monday and Tuesday (July 20, 21) went viral—which amounted to heaven for carnival addicts and a relief to those afflicted with “carnival tabanca.”

Senator Guibion Ferdinand has been endorsed by the executive of the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) again to be the candidate for the Micoud South constituency. Per data from the Electoral Department, current MP Prime Minister Allen Chastanet received 2541 votes in the 2016 general elections, defeating Ferdinand who had 1409. Following his defeat at the polls, Ferdinand was sworn in as a senator.

Health Minister Mary Issac has defended government's decision to keep a daily curfew of 9:00 pm- 5:00 am. At today's Senate sitting, Issac was speaking on a motion to extend the state of emergency in Saint Lucia from June 1 to September 30. She indicated that they do not know what to expect when the country's borders are opened, and that they have been told that there may be additional waves of COVID-19. Given this, she said the state of emergency must be kept in case there is a need to act quickly and change measures that are now in place, like the curfew.
