We’ve heard almost non-stop from the Opposition SLP about the absolute horrors of the DSH project and that Allen Chastanet’s dealings with Teo Ah Khing serve as just another reminder of UWP “vindictiveness and callousness” toward Saint Lucia’s abused poor. Last week it was the turn of Vieux Fort North MP Moses Jn Baptiste: “The Saint Lucia Labour Party reminds the prime minister that this healthcare crisis in Saint Lucia is more important than the horses that will be given brand new, air-conditioned facilities which will be paid for by money belonging to all Saint Lucians.”

The Caribbean has a rich resource – its marine and coastal environment. From fish to seaweed, there’s plenty to trade beneath the waters but it’s vital that these type of exports are done sustainably, especially as the demand rises for applications in food, pharmaceuticals and personal care products. As blue bio-exports increase across the Eastern Caribbean, responsibly harnessing the power of the blue economy is helping governments diversify their economies and grow their domestic aquaculture.

Forgiveness is acceptable. Advocating for repentance and recommending Jesus is commendable. But killing an innocent man in the comfort of his home while he was eating ice-cream and watching television deserves real jail time not a slap on the wrist and a hug. The family is responsible, to a large extent, for setting a strong moral foundation for society. Even though the “liberty and security” of everyone are rights guaranteed by Constitution, the updated Criminal Code which was approved by Parliament clearly discriminates against a large section of the population because of their homosexuality. No one would support the Criminal Code if it blatantly created a law that contradicted freedom of worship, which is guaranteed […]

But it is the best way to earn some money. “I’m too old to stay in Saint Lucia with no work,” is what a recent graduate from a Taiwanese university told me when she was on her way to America, not knowing where she would live or how she would get the money to survive. All she knew was that there was nothing at home for her.

Last Sunday’s series of police operations conducted in the northern part of the island involved over 71 officers and resulted in seven arrests on a number of firearms and drug-related charges. Eighteen motor vehicles were impounded, 58 tickets issued. Modern Russia holds a storied image internationally that no longer has a bearing in reality. In the days of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), Moscow went head-to-head with Washington in the battle to be the world’s most powerful economic force, but the modern era of Russia has seen it steadily losing influence as an economic power.
